If you are running Windows XP you can right click on the file and choose "send to" and then choose "CDRW Drive" if you are running and older version of Windows you will need CD Burning software such as Roxio Easy CD Creator to name just one.

go to "my computer" browse to your external hard drive then open another "my computer" window drag and drop the file(s) you want to the window displaying the external hard drive.

There is software to do this available from the hard drive manufacturer website. You can also try downloading Seagate DiscWizard. It's free. Here's how I copied my new drive.
