How do you drain an inground swimming pool

Answer:

Draining an inground pool

Firstly, you satisfy yourself that it is safe to drain your pool. If ground-water is present, in-ground pools can transform themselves into 'boats' when empty and 'float' right out of the ground. Also be sure the structure of the pool can withstand the outside forces of being empty. Gunite or concrete pools are usually OK structurally but fibergalss pools are not. When you have definitley confirmed that it is OK/safe to empty YOUR pool - you need a submersible pump and discharge hose suffiently long to reach the drain point. Lower the pump into the pool to the depth to which you wish to lower the water. Best and easiest way - call your local Pool Service guy and he will do it for you.

How to drain a pool-

Basically you just need hose and a sump pump (both can be rented at Home depot). The concern with hydrostatic floating can happen but I have never seen it. Make sure that the hose that you are using to drain the pool is emptying the pool into the sewer drain (typically a covered black pipe sticking up somewhere in the from of the house). You can get away with draining the pool into the street at night if you have to but that is an absolute last resort, do all you can to find the drain first.

Pool companies typically charge around $100 dollars for a drain and fill. I have attached a link to my company in Las Vegas in the "links" portion towards the top of this page. We drain for $71.00. (PoolTileCleaningLasVegas.com)

More input from FAQ Farmers:

  • As the owner of a pool company we are always cautious when draining a pool for maintenance. Our specialty is concrete pools. Normally we wait till there has been no rain for several days. However some areas are notorious for having high ground water tables during even dry periods. Whenever the decision is made to drain the pool, the first thing we do is make sure there is a hydrostatic valve in the main floor drain. We prop it open to make sure it is not sealed shut for any reason. If there is a plug in the hole then we remove the plug asap. We then replace the plug with a hydrostatic relief valve which costs less than $10.00 and can save an owner thousands or the loss of their pool.
